Finishing of furniture and architectural units (New version)
The Furniture and Architectural Finishes vocational program prepares students for the profession of furniture finishing. These people work in companies that manufacture furniture, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, architectural units, caskets, etc. They may also work in companies in the aerospace sector as well as for companies whose activities are exclusively aimed at the finishing of furniture and/or architectural units. As part of their work, furniture finishers prepare surfaces and apply tinting and coating products to achieve a predetermined finish. They make these finishes on wood and wood-based surfaces. Their task also includes composing colours, retouching, polishing, stripping and developing finishing systems. Furniture and architectural units are finished using hand tools, electrical and compressed air equipment, automated systems and industrial robots. In addition to having excellent visual acuity and the ability to distinguish colours, people who work in this profession must be in good physical condition. They are called upon to lift loads, work for several hours on their feet and perform repetitive movements. In addition, they must be able to wear a mask while performing their work to protect themselves from ambient dust and chemical vapours, especially in a physical environment where finishing products with a high volatile organic compound (VOC) content are used.
